Nvidia to Launch US-Compliant AI Chip for China Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Nvidia plans to introduce a modified AI chip for the Chinese market in September, designed to comply with U.S. export restrictions. The Financial Times reports the new product will exclude high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and NVLink—key features barred under Washington's regulations. This cautious approach follows April's $5.5 billion write-down after export controls blocked its H20 chip.
CEO Jensen Huang is seeking high-level meetings in Beijing during the International Supply Chain Expo, including requested talks with Premier Li Qiang and Vice Premier He Lifeng. His visit underscores mounting geopolitical pressures—Huang previously criticized Trump-era chip export bans as counterproductive, noting they accelerated China's domestic AI development while eroding Nvidia's market share from 95% to single digits.
